Gavin Isaacs, the former CEO of Scientific Games who joined SBTech as non-executive chairman three weeks ago, has cautioned the online gambling sector not to underestimate  the role existing land-based suppliers have to play in the expanding US market.

In an interview with SBC News, Isaacs said: “The industry landscape today is changing faster than ever, and the future is very much online.

“You shouldn’t underestimate the big suppliers on the land-based side as they’re going to play a significant role in shaping how things evolve, but there are some great companies out there such as SBTech that have already made huge progress in all the key regulated markets, and that are going to continue to make huge inroads across new and emerging jurisdictions such as the US”

Isaacs told SBC that his first three weeks at SBTech had been a flurry of activity. “The first thing I’ve done is to travel to all the SBTech offices in Bulgaria, Tel Aviv, Kiev and finishing in London to meet with various executives and teams to understand the products more so I can then sit down with the rest of the management team to help shape the business’s strategy.

“I’ll be using my previous experience to help the company navigate regulated markets, in particular the US, regulated US states and those states that are considering opening in the coming months and years.”

Isaacs said his new role represented a conscious move away from the land-based gaming sector, where he has been such an influential figure, and into igaming.

“I had run several large land-based gaming companies and asked myself whether I wanted to do it again,” he said.

“After a great deal of thought, I felt that I needed to look to the future and assess where I could make an impact within an area where I believe the industry is heading, and that is online with sports initially being the main driver.

“The industry landscape today is changing faster than ever, and the future is very much online,” said Isaacs.

“The potential is huge, and SBTech is investing significantly in its technology and infrastructure on the ground to enable it to maximise this long-term opportunity. Being based in Las Vegas and having worked here for several years across many of the industry’s largest suppliers I will be able to use my knowledge of the US market to support and grow the company’s US expansion.”

DraftKings does not anticipate an impact to its long-term plans due to COVID-19, as the Boston, Massachusetts, headquartered firm lauds the return of major sports in the US as losses widen.

Adding over $800m to its balance sheet and ending the second quarter with over $1.2bn in cash and no debt, revenue for the three month period to June 30, 2020, dropped 23.5 per cent from $57.3m to $70.9m year-on-year.

DraftKings said it had a loss of $161.4m, or 55 cents a share, during the period, as opposed to the loss of $28.1m, or 15 cents a share, posted during the same period a year earlier.

For the first six months of the year revenue increased 27 per cent to $159.4m (2019: $125.4m) year-on-year, with a loss of $230.1m, or 97 cents a share, as opposed to a loss of $57.6m, or 31 cents a share, in 2019.

On a pro forma basis, including the effect of the company’s business combination with SBTech and Diamond Eagle Acquisition as if it had been completed on January 1, 2019, revenue would have been $75m during Q2, compared to $83m during the same period a year earlier.

As sporting events began to resume, the company reported an increased engagement with its sports-based product offerings, which contributed to sequential monthly revenue improvement during the second quarter. This positive momentum is said to have accelerated with the return of MLB, the NBA, WNBA, the NHL, and MLS.

Furthermore, the company is also introducing fiscal year 2020 pro forma revenue guidance of $500m to $540m, which equates to year-over-year growth of 22 per cent to 37 per cent in the second half of 2020.

However, this assumes that the professional sports calendar remains as currently contemplated and that DraftKings operates in the states in which it’s currently live.

“We believe that the best product will ultimately win with the American consumer,” said Jason Robins, DraftKings co-founder, CEO and chairman of the board. “As a technology first organisation, we will continue to focus on bringing new and innovative products to market that strengthen our engagement with customers and maintain our competitive differentiation.”

DraftKings and SBTech have lauded revenue growth during the year’s first quarter, despite combined losses widening during the period, after the pair’s merger agreement, alongside Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp, entered completion after the reporting period.

Finalising last month and officially beginning its listing on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ‘DKNG’, revenue for the pair in the three months to March 31, 2020, came in at $112.99m, representing a 23.1 per cent increase from $91.78m.

Asserting that the company does not anticipate an impact to FY2021 or long-term plans due to COVID-19, the headline revenue figure was made up of $88.54m by DraftKings, a 30 per cent increase from $68m, and $24.44m (2019: $23.69m) by SBTech, as global sporting cancellations impacted performance across the period.

Net loss for the two enlarged to $76.23m (2019: $30.07m,) as those at the legacy DraftKings business reached $68.68m, 133 per cent larger than 2019’s $29.55m, with SBTech swinging from a profit of $522,000 to a loss of $7.55m.

Adjusted EBITDA for 2020’s first quarter came to a combined -$50.38m (2019: -$15.72m), DraftKings fell to -$49.46m (2019: -$20.41m) with SBTech reaching -$920,000 from $4.69m.

“We are uniquely positioned at the intersection of digital sports entertainment and gaming in a rapidly growing industry,” said Jason Robins, DraftKings co-founder, CEO and chairman of the board.

“DraftKings recorded standalone Q1 year-over-year revenue growth of 30 per cent despite the effects of COVID-19. Additionally, the engagement we continue to see from our customers validates the connection they have with our content, their passion for our products and most importantly their loyalty to our brand.”

Lauded recent igaming entries into Pennsylvania, online sports betting in Colorado and online and retail sports wagering in Iowa, Boston-based DraftKings stresses an expectation to make progress on its key priorities despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

These include continuing to enter new states, investing in product and technology in a bid to create more unique offerings and live betting for American-based sports, and acquiring and retaining our customers.

Entering an agreement to supply its portfolio of casino content and marketing tools to the platform provider, it follows “several high-profile operator deals” inked by the firm.

Distributing its entire RGS portfolio of casino and slot content to SBTech’s platform partners, the direct integration with the company’s igaming platform will enable partners  access to a multitude of content.

Making a library of more than 250 games available, Oryx’s RGS includes proprietary content and titles from partnered studios such as Gamomat, Kalamba, Golden Hero and Givme Games.
