Many operators around the world are now putting significant resources into attracting their retail players into the online space, but according to Andy Stubley, VP Commercial at SG Digital, there needs to be an element of familiarity with the games.

In a discussion with Jon Lancaster (vice president of sales – EMEA for SG Gaming), Simon Johnson (senior vice president and managing director – EMEA for SG Gaming) and Stewart Darkin (managing director of CasinoBeats), Stubley reflected on how adapting retail games for the online space can help ease a player’s transition into playing online.

He explained: “Familiarity is really important, especially during these times. Operators are marketing to players from a traditional retail environment who are looking to continue their entertainment online. To do this, they’re marketing familiar games. Whether it’s Rainbow Riches in the UK or 88 Fortunes, which is our number one game across Europe, this really helps to drive that familiarity for players.

“We’ve got 1000s of those games out in the market in retail – it’s part of a family of games. Online, we launched 88 Fortunes four years ago and it continues to increase in popularity with players. Throughout Europe, it’s our number one in Italy and Sweden, in the Netherlands, in Norway, in Greece, Austria, it’s number two in Germany, Spain, Finland, it’s such a popular game with players.”

Citing the example of SG Digital’s leading Jin Ji Bao Xi title, Stubley explained that to elevate the online player experience, it took the step to add features such as Megaways and jackpots.

“We do expand on the family,” he continued. “So we’ve got another game that was really successful in retail, Jin Ji Bao Xi which we’ve adapted for online. That’s coming out in a couple of months’ time, we’ve got Jin Ji Bao Xi with Megaways, that’s a familiarity in itself as well.

“So combining those together is changing the gaming experience for the retail player – they come online with some familiarity, and then they move on through the family of games, then into pure online content which is what we see when we look at the data.”

When it comes to the land-based sector across the EMEA region, Lancaster disclosed that the last 12 months have posed some major challenges in terms of communicating with clients – eased somewhat by the ‘strength of relationships’ Scientific Games holds with its customers.

The VP of Sales noted that as restrictions begin to lift around the world, his job is to now understand what it is that clients want: “In our position, the customers have been closed and have not had a lot of clarity on when they will open,” he said. “Our job is to try and understand what it is they need and match our strategies and our products to their needs going forward.

“Many of our customers have had a fundamental shift in what they’re looking for going forward. Originally, they were looking to diversify their products and portfolios as well as attract new player demographics. But what many have now realised is that in the short term, they need to get back to basics, they need to bring back their top players, they need guaranteed products, which will deliver the best performance once they can open.

“So we’re definitely seeing a shift in what it is that customers are looking for. Thankfully for us, we believe we have exactly the right products which can help them to drive recovery.”

One way in which Scientific Games has gained insights into the products that its customers want was through the launch of a forum. This, shared Johnson, has helped the company to create highly specific solutions for customers which are tailored to individual regions.

“I think the most important thing that we will have to recognise is there’s no playbook for the situation that we’re in. That’s partly because it’s the experience of the pandemic, and experience of market conditions are intensely local,” he said.

“So when you’re working across a region as diverse as the one that John and I work in, you have to recognise that you’re looking at multiple different tracks, multiple different experiences, multiple different government responses, multiple different human experiences.

“Whilst you can have a global position, you’ve got to make sure that your response is very local. So first and foremost, it’s around understanding the position on the ground, what individual customers are going through, and what their market conditions are. You then have to be able to create highly specific solutions or help them create highly specific solutions.”

Johnson then turned his attention towards the necessity of short-term, flexible planning – something which he believes is essential to continue operating over the next 12 to 18 months.

He continued: “You also have to recognise that while much of the human condition is to look for certainty, we all find uncertainty extremely difficult. We look to people, whether it’s politicians or scientists to give us some reassurance when looking around the corner. There is no way that people can know what’s going to happen next.

“We’ve got to recognise that uncertainty is bred into any consumer facing business. For the next 12 to 18 months, there’s just going to be a whole load of unanswered questions that we’re only going to come to as we experience them. This then means that business planning has to become short-term and highly flexible.

“You then end up in a situation where you start working through customers on an individual basis. We need to make sure that what we are presenting to our customers is flexible enough and reflects their local market needs – providing them with the support they need to manage uncertain times.

“We know there are some consistent factors. People are trying to understand the point at which they can open up their businesses – and so they must make sure they can get COVID secure. so be able to share our experiences of the parts of the world.”

Yggdrasil has outlined plans to reinvent igaming aggregation via its YG Masters programme, as disclosed in the second episode of the What’s Up Ygg podcast.

The podcast begins with a shared discussion between three representatives from Yggdrasil: CEO Fredrik Elmqvist, chief of global marketing operations Bjorn Krantz and head of product and programmes, Stuart McCarthy.

Alongside the podcast host Stewart Darkin, they were joined by AvatarUX managing director Marcus Honney and Mitri Wiberg, executive producer at Peter & Sons LLC

McCarthy kicked off the discussion by addressing the evolution of the YG Masters programme, and how it all stemmed from a plan to drive “greater relevance” for Yggdrasil.

He began: “The kick off point, which is more or less three years to the day, was when I joined the organisation. Fred reached out to me with this vision that he wanted to achieve. I had previously been working for another company in aggregation and had an understanding of the mechanics, how aggregation was working and how we thought we could do better.

“Fred reached out and explained that he had this idea about driving greater relevance for Yggdrasil, expanding our portfolio, looking at how we can bring on new flavours of game content onto the platform. That was the inception of the programme really.

“We had this idea that we would be building game content, creating game engines on our side and then working with a small number of studios, delivering everyone to market with our boost tools.”

Reflecting on the influences behind creating the YG Masters programme, Elmqvist placed a focus upon innovation and creativity. He explained that, similar to the creation of Yggdrasil – a topic covered in the first episode of What’s Up Ygg – the company wanted to “do things differently” from anything else available in the market.

“We saw that there was a lot of creativity coming from all different angles, and we knew that there was an appetite for a lot of content,” he added. “We knew it would be difficult to increase the production and scale in a way that would be able to meet the growing demands from the market.

“We said to ourselves ‘we have nimble technology, we can build something here that’s more scalable and more competitive’.

“In the previous episode, I spoke about how we started Yggdrasil – and I thought we should take a similar approach to aggregation. I wanted to do things differently from what’s already out there. So we identified what can bring a lot of value for the entire chain, what would be of value to studios and our customers. That was the go-to-market starting point.

“But to take the programme to the next level, we needed to do some further innovation with regards to technology in order to reshape YG Masters – something which would bring more value and more intellectual property.”

One of the key benefits of the YG Masters programme, according to Krantz, was the opportunity to benefit from a business of scale.

Taking into account the changes in market dynamics, Krantz highlighted that many operators are now looking for differentiation within their games offering – something which he believes is possible through the YG Masters programme.

He said: “When we are talking to the customers across various different global markets, we know that market dynamics have changed a lot in the past few years. Now operators are looking for more relevance in the content that they have; they want to have more differentiation in their portfolios.

“I think that the scale of operations here is also important because if you look at the regulatory side of the business and the cost of operating, a business’ scale is everything. The YG Masters programme enables us to offer that scale to partners which is very efficient.”

Talk soon turned towards some of the partners of the YG Masters programme, and their experiences of working with Yggdrasil. And for Honney, working with the supplier has helped drive a level of exposure which has meant people are now recognising AvatarUX as an individual studio.

Discussing the reasons behind their partnership, he said: “From our point of view, I think we were the second one to join the party if you like. We joined for a lot of the reasons that both Fred and Stuart have already mentioned. But on top of that, it does also help that we knew the individuals involved, there was a relationship there already – we’ve seen each other through different situations.

“But from a studio point of view, I’ve got to be able to take the emotion out of these relationships and be honest to the investors that we have in our company. We want to make sure that we go to the right partners because we’ve got a good portfolio of games.

“So having a programme like YG Masters with the mechanics and structure that was already in place meant that we didn’t need to worry about licensing or distribution – both of which are a huge cost to us, especially as a newer studio.

“If you look at the kind of revenues that we’re generating now compared to last year, it’s chalk and cheese. All of a sudden, people are noticing us and it’s given us an opportunity. Ygggdrasil has given us a level of exposure and people are starting to recognise us as an individual studio.”

With various different dynamics at play across the igaming industry, the latest episode of Yggdrasil’sWhat’s Up Ygg” podcast placed a particular focus upon the overwhelming need for “balance” on the regulatory front.

Moderated by Square in the Air’s Stewart Darkin, episode four of the podcast series saw Yggdrasil’s CEO Fredrik Elmqvist, Björn Krantz, chief global market officer of Yggdrasil, and industry journalist Robin Harrison Milan touch upon the challenges and opportunities facing the industry, as well as the impacts of both COVID-19 and regulations.

Opening up the discussions, Elmqvist addressed some of the major dynamics at play across the igaming industry – pointing towards the more positive trends, and those which are not so positive.

“Industry dynamics is a super broad topic, and there are so many factors at play if you’re looking at it from a global perspective,” he began.

“We are a casino developer at heart, but we’re now taking more of a publishing role, working more to enable external technology, enabling external studios and so forth. All of this is bringing relevance to our market.

“But taking a few steps back and looking at the casino industry from a global perspective, we obviously see some turbulence in Asia. We’re seeing the impacts of regulation across Europe – these can swing either way.

“We’re all for the regulation, but restrictions which are too heavy can have a negative impact on the legitimate market. This can then create some really dark things – by that I mean counterfeit B2B and B2C organisations, hijack streams etc.

“From the other side, we have things such as SPACs, sports betting etc. But as you can see, it’s a super dynamic landscape at the moment.”

So when it comes to ensuring that new regulations aren’t to the detriment of player protection, Krantz underlined the importance of collaboration between the gaming industry and the regulators.

He added: “This collaboration between the industry and the regulators is key. The regulator should also have an appetite to gain insight into the possible effects here; they should know what they want to achieve, and how to both streamline and harmonise the frameworks so that it is optimised towards responsible gaming measures.

“If we look at Germany which has a one euro max bet, we hear in the market that this could drive the RTP down which is not good either. If you have a low stake, and then you’re taxed on turnover – which I think can, and most likely will happen in Germany – then you have no margins. In order to get any sort of margin, people will lower the RTP to get a little bit more out of it – but that is not helping players.

“When you introduce measures which aren’t helping the player side of things, that’s when bettors start to look elsewhere and you have lower channelisation into the regulated market.

“I think the main thing to consider here is balance. There is this collaboration and proactive dialogue which news to happen between the industry and the regulator – not just within one individual country but maybe on a wider scale.”

Innovation has been a defining feature of Yggdrasil’s journey from inception through to 2021 according to Fredrik Elmqvist, the company’s CEO, as explained in the new ‘What’s up Ygg?’ podcast.

In the first episode entitled ‘King of Slots’, listeners can gain an insight into Yggdrasil’s journey as a company – from inception through to 2021 – and how the company has evolved during that time.

Hosted by Stewart Darkin, director of new media at Square in the Air, the podcast began by focusing on the pair’s first meeting at ICE 2013. The Yggdrasil CEO began: “I’ve been in the industry since 2006.

“I first started out in sports betting, and then made the move over to the casino side of things. I’ve been running Yggdrasil for some time now – and it’s been such a fun journey. I remember back in 2013 at ICE, running around the hallways with just an iPad trying to grab people and tell them you had something really good going on.”

Reflecting on the early days, Elmqvist explained that Yggdrasil initially set out to become a company which ‘did things differently’ from others in the industry, highlighting that he wanted to create a company which did not simply ‘mimic’ other providers.

Instead, he expressed the importance of innovation from the get-go – something which he believes has helped define the overall vision that Yggdrasil now has.

“At the time, there was Microgaming, Playtech, NetEnt etc. These were the leading companies within the industry. Everyone was trying to do something which mimicked these big names – no one was really trying to innovate from the beginning.

“So when I left NetEnt, I had this idea that we should be doing things differently from the beginning. We should be working from the bottom upwards, innovating in terms of technology, user experiences and promotional tools.

“It was tedious to build everything from scratch, rather than copying the big providers, but that also became the core essence of Yggdrasil as a company. It showed that we had this ambition, and it’s shaped the people that came on board in the early days.

“We showed this ambition to people who we wanted to join the company, and some people were discouraged by it of course because it required a lot of hard work. But then some people really liked this drive that we had. So we had a lot of momentum from the get go largely because of how we defined ourselves as a company.”

When quizzed on how Yggdrasil managed to ‘play the long game’, Elmqvist noted that a methodical approach is fundamental. “You need to be able to think that you’re running one hundred metres each day but at the same time, you need to think about the marathon,” he shared.

“You do need to have that sense of urgency, and should apply a kind of understanding that certain things will take time to happen. You’ll need to mature over time and then can follow more of a methodological process.

“There will be things that need to be addressed there and then – this is something that every manager needs to understand. What are the thighs that you can apply a sense of urgency to? And what things can you work on over time?

“What I still enjoy about the company is that it has evolved over the years and become much more of a sustainable, diverse company than it was before. It has a different momentum and a completely different trajectory. I love to see that Yggdrasil is still evolving.”

Looking forward to the remainder of 2021, Elmqvist outlined Yggdrasil’s plans to create a ‘more sustainable and diversified business’ by focusing on its corporate governance trajectory, its platform studio and the decision to licence its mechanical frameworks.

He said: “I think that with what we’re doing at the minute, we need to add another layer. Bringing in reference to those at Bridgepoint who I have tremendous respect for being able to take a company like Yggdrasil from where we were in terms of sustainability and bringing it to the level where we are now. We are now seeing the company take a big leap forward and it’s so interesting to be at the centre because this is something we didn’t necessarily do before.

“Outside of the corporate governance trajectory, we have also moved from a number of fragmented studios located here and there to one core platform studio based in Poland. So we’ll be focusing on that, on our own roadmap.

“We’ll also be focusing on becoming a publisher where we can apply franchise models, enable studios to develop things on our platform. We licence or mechanical frameworks – which is something we’ll touch upon later in the series with some other of our team members – but this is just another trajectory in the development of our company which will ultimately create a more sustainable and diversified business.”

The new series, titled ‘What’s up YGG’, will consist of 10 episodes covering various topical issues including game development, partner collaborations, player experience, game engagement mechanics, jackpots, the streamer community’s impact on the industry and much more.

The interview covers Aspire Global’s organic growth and acquisitions of Pariplay and BtoBet, and its evolution from white label-focused business to platform provider working with tier one operators.

As well as examining Aspire Global’s journey to date, the session looks at its future direction, including how the company has positioned itself to take advantage of the opportunities in new regulated markets in the US, Latin America, Africa, and Europe.

Maimon also reveals that his company’s immediate strategy is to utilise its broad product and service offering to target deals with major operators.

CasinoBeats Malta Digital is set to take an in-depth look at the major recruitment and workforce management challenges facing operators and suppliers in Malta, with input from some of the leading HR professionals in the igaming industry.

The virtual conference and exhibition runs from 30 June to 2 July 2020, and day one is devoted to the subject of Working in Malta. The content track, sponsored by GamingMalta, will be accompanied by a series of themed networking events to allow delegates to share their own ideas and learn from each other.

How gaming businesses can cope with skills shortages, develop a positive workplace culture and offer the right support to staff as the industry recovers from the COVID-19 lockdown are just some of the issues set to be examined. While the agenda is focused on employment-related issues in Malta’s igaming community, many of the topics will resonate with HR directors and managers based further afield.

One of the key sessions is Workplace Culture & Wellbeing, which features a panel of HR specialists from world-leading gaming businesses, including Lena Nordin (Chief HR Officer, Betsson Group), Cindy Macintos (HR Director, Pinnacle) and Richard Gordon (Employer Brand, Recruitment Marketing & Social Media Manager, GVC Group).

They will look at how gaming companies can develop a well-defined workplace culture and how that benefits them in terms of recruiting and retaining the right staff in what is a competitive market. The panel will also share their ideas on how to attract skilled workers from overseas to Malta, while trying to prevent a salary-driven revolving door employment market developing on the island.

Two further sessions will address how to overcome the difficulties in finding the right team members, as Malta’s reputation as the home of the online casino industry attracts more companies to relocate and an increasing number of innovative start-ups.

Mind the Gap: Skills Shortage will investigate whether there is potential for igaming businesses to attract specialists from other sectors and look at which skills are genuinely transferable. Malta Gaming Authority’s Head of Information Kinga Warda and igaming consultant Anna Wallenstein will be among those debating whether the island’s casino industry is doing enough to nurture the talent it already has.

The Resourcing Challenge will then look at the issue of how gaming companies can ensure they have the skills required to fulfil their compliance responsibilities. A panel featuring Sarah Yorston (Head of HR – South Europe, LeoVegas) will evaluate whether the positives of using third-party specialists outweigh the benefits of undertaking ongoing staff training to build stronger in-house compliance teams.

Another important issue is to be tackled during the Destination Malta: COVID Update session, which will focus on how the island’s gaming industry plans to recover from the lockdown. Fiona Brown (Chief HR Officer, Catena Media) and communications specialist Natasha Gowans will also look at what businesses can do to support employees during the recovery and continue to bring in the additional skills they need to achieve their growth targets.

In addition to the HR content and a keynote presentation by GamingMalta’s COO Ivan Filletti, delegates attending the first day of CasinoBeats Malta Digital can participate in themed networking sessions focused on the opportunities for workers in the island’s igaming sector and the country’s appeal as a destination for start-ups.

Stewart Darkin, Managing Director of CasinoBeats, said: “While all businesses in the online casino industry focus on technology, games and marketing, the really successful ones also understand the importance of looking after their staff and getting their recruitment procedures right.

“Our speaker line-up includes HR professionals responsible for ensuring that happens in some of the world’s best-known igaming companies, so delegates can expect to pick up some invaluable insights on both Malta-specific and industry-wide employment issues.”

The CasinoBeats Malta Digital agenda also includes tracks about the Future of Gaming, Technology & Innovation, Regulation & Compliance, and Payments.

Away from the conference rooms, the 3,000 industry delegates will have multiple opportunities to make new contacts. In addition to the schedule of themed networking sessions, attendees can take part in workshops with sector experts, join in group discussions in the virtual networking bar or use the event platform’s chat facility for one-to-one conversations.

There is also a 40-booth interactive exhibition showcasing the latest products from both leading suppliers and innovative start-ups, along with a programme of product presentations running throughout the event.

On Wednesday, a session sponsored by ICS Digital will examine how operators adapted to the COVID-19 crisis and what opportunities emerged during the changed market conditions of recent months. Speakers include Mårten Forste (COO, LeoVegas) Petra Zackrisson (CCDO, Betano Stoiximan), Americo Loureiro (Director, Solverde) and Shelly Suter-Hadad (CEO, Casumo), with William Scott (Director, Warrenside) handling moderator’s duties.

Thursday’s panel features a group of high-profile executives offering their insights on how to tackle the major challenges facing the gaming industry today and where the best long-term opportunities may lie. It features Pontus Lindwall (CEO & Founder, Betsson), Jesper Karrbrink (Chairman, Green Jade Games), Ariel Reem (CEO, Genesis Global) and Alexander Martin (CEO, SKS365), with Dinos Stranomitis (COO, Alternar) in the moderator’s chair.

Stewart Darkin, Managing Director of CasinoBeats, said: “The gaming industry is evolving rapidly to keep pace with constantly changing player tastes and technological advances, and it can be difficult to stay up to date with all the latest developments.

“The high-level speakers on the Future of Gaming track will help CasinoBeats Malta Digital delegates to stay one step ahead, by sharing expert insights on the direction of the industry from the perspectives of major operators, games developers, platform suppliers and leading affiliates.”

Other sessions on Wednesday include the Affiliate Leaders Panel sponsored by Intertops. It will see Fintan Costello (Managing Director, Bonusfinder.com) moderate a panel of Tobias Svensen (CEO, CasinoGrounds), Jonathan Edelshaim (CEO, Natural Intelligence), Hamish Brown (VP Casino, Catena Media) and Marcos Oliveira (Chief Affiliate Officer, Clever Advertising Group) as they examine how the changing regulatory climate will alter the way affiliates operate.

The growing importance of casino platforms to the industry will be in the spotlight during the Platforms & Aggregators panel. Melvin Ritsema (MD, Royal Panda), Rui Pena (COO & Co-Founder, Darwin Interactive) and Stian Hornsletten, CCO of session sponsor EveryMatrix, will assess what the platforms’ influence on the market means for both games studios and operators.

Concluding the Future of Gaming content for 1 July is Live Casino: At A Crossroads, which is sponsored by Pragmatic Play. A panel consisting of Jeremy Taylor (MD, Genting Online), Christos Mavridis (Live Casino Mgr, Stoiximan / Betano), Sam Brown (CCO, Hero Gaming) and Stefania Mincu (Head of Casino, Ellmount Interactive) will consider how the sector can develop new game concepts, cross sell to slots players and stay up to date emerging technologies.

On Thursday, attention switches to Gamification, its future role in the online casino industry and whether it is of real value to operators. The panel features Ross Parkhill (MD, Rhino Entertainment), Andy Braithwaite (CCO, Scatters), Uri Admon (CEO, Captain Up) and David Flynn (CEO, Swintt), with Karolina Pelc (Strategic Advisor, Basic Strategy) chairing the discussion.

The resurgent Online Poker sector is the next part of the gaming ecosystem to face scrutiny, as Manuel Lopes (CEO, Pokio/Qufan Technology), Sergii Romanenko (COO, Pokerok) and Ivonne Montealegre (Event Director, Malta Poker Festival) look at how the game can sustain its popularity and become a profitable long-term proposition for operators.

Concluding the track is Acquisition & Personalisation, which sees a panel including Assaf Stieglitz (Founder, Odds1x2.com) and Tal Itzhak Ron (Chairman & CEO, Tal Ron, Drihem & Co) outline the next generation of strategies for attracting and then optimising the lifetime value of players.

The CasinoBeats Malta Digital agenda also includes tracks about Working in Malta, Technology & Innovation, Regulation & Compliance, and Payments.

Jeff Letlat, CEO at BOSS Gaming Solutions, attended the previous CasinoBeats event as an official sponsor for SBC back in June.

“It has been very important from the business perspective” Letlat commented. “Resources from networking, from also pushing BOSS Gaming as a name. We are exactly in the right position and in the right time,” he continued.

While continuing to touch on his experience at CasinoBeats Malta, Letlat expressed BOSS Gaming’s enjoyment of being an official SBC sponsor for the event: “We think SBC are doing great, it has been a very great experience with SBC so far.

“It is not the first time we are doing such things, such as the online banners etc, so we have a very big demand coming from you guys. We are extremely happy as a sponsor.”

The latest CasinoBeats Malta event, which will be a four-track conference and two-day exhibition will take place at the Intercontinental Malta in St Julian’s on March 25/26, 2020.

Stewart Darkin has been promoted to managing director of CasinoBeats, the casino media division of Sports Betting Community (SBC).

Darkin (pictured) joined SBC in January, 2018, as editor of the CasinoBeats.com gaming news portal, overseeing the brand’s content strategy and its first steps into events, specifically the CasinoBeats Summit in September and December’s inaugural CasinoBeats Awards.

A year after launch, Darkin takes on additional responsibility for CasinoBeats’ strategic direction, retaining oversight on content but also managing the growth of the Summit and a series of new ventures for the growing brand.

“It has been a landmark year for CasinoBeats,” he said, “not only as a new brand finding its place in a bustling sector, but also as a content source that keeps pace with an ever-changing industry.

“As we move into 2019, we can reflect on the foundations laid in our first year and, together, be very excited about the future. There is much work to be done but I am confident that we are establishing a reputation as a fast, open and reliable source.”

Rasmus Sojmark, founder and CEO of SBC, added: “Our aim has always been for CasinoBeats to become a leading voice in the gaming media – and one that simply cannot be ignored.

“A year into the project, we couldn’t be happier with the foundations we have put down. Now, as managing drector, Stewart has the additional platform to take CasinoBeats to the next level – and we’re all excited to see what we can achieve together.”

As part of the restructuring, journalist Craig Davies  (pictured, left) has also been promoted, to the role of news editor at CasinoBeats.com.

Davies joined SBC in September, 2017, and has been writing across the group titles sbcnews.co.uk, affiliateinsider.com, esportsinsider.com and Insidersport.com – as well as daily work on CasinoBeats.

Andrew McCarron, managing director of SBC, said: “Our aim is for CasinoBeats to become the sector’s ‘trusted advisor’ – not simply through the site content, daily newsletter and events, but because of its willingness to tell good stories and ability to facilitate meaningful debate and powerful networking.

“We believe Stewart and Craig are the right team to achieve this.”

The CasinoBeats Summit 2019 will take place alongside Betting on Sports at Olympia London on 17-20 September.

Four tracks of content and accompanying exhibition space with 40 exhibitors will host 75 speakers and attract 1,000 delegates to the heart of the world’s largest regulated online casino market. To find out more, visit www.casinobeatssummit.com
